Sergey began in medicine. He trained as a physician at the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University in Moscow, then earned a PhD in public health from the Central Public Health Research Institute of Russia's Ministry of Health. Even early on, he was drawn less to treating one patient at a time than to the larger question waiting behind the clinic door: why whole communities fall ill, and what genuinely helps them get better.
In 2011 a Fulbright Scholarship brought him to Central Michigan University, where he worked with mathematician Carl Lee on disease models and where he eventually made his home. He became a contributor to the Global Burden of Disease study, the largest effort ever made to measure the health of the world, co-authoring analyses across 204 countries on conditions ranging from meningitis to allergic disease. His collaborations have always reached past any single institution, including contract assignments for international organizations such as the World Health Organization, alongside long-running partnerships across Central Asia, Russia, and Europe.
Sergey's curiosity tends toward the places where ordinary data goes quiet. He has parsed darknet drug-market data to map addiction that official statistics miss, and read patterns in internet searches to catch outbreaks early, always with the same aim: to give people an honest picture of their own health. Today, as a public-health faculty member at CMU and the founder of Lakes Linked, he is bringing that world-scale method home, applying modern mathematico-statistical methods at the county level for the first time so that small, rural Michigan communities can see themselves clearly and plan for a healtheir future.
